In my corner, people often reach out to me for advice on their projects and ideas. I do my best to share valuable insights, and sometimes I even get involved, whether as an accountability partner or as someone who helps them execute their plans. Whatever support they need, I show up.
Recently, a young lady reached out to me. She had a successful brand but was hesitant to introduce a new business idea or transition into it fully. Her fear? What the internet might say. I gave her my honest advice, and now she’s thriving—on fire, as they say.
People Will Always Have Something to Say
As much as I was happy to help her, it made me reflect. Here I was, facing a similar challenge—worried about how people perceive me online. I’ve built a certain image, and the thought of altering it was intimidating. Would people think I’m unsure of what I want? Would they say I’m trying to do too much? Would they question my consistency?
The truth is, people will always have opinions.
Whether I stay the same or change my approach, someone will have something to say. So why not focus on my growth and development? At the end of the day, that’s what truly matters.
How I’m Tackling This
1. Defining Success and Satisfaction
The first step for me has been understanding what success and satisfaction mean in every area of my life. When you’re clear about your goals, external opinions become less significant. I’ve learned to focus on my personal definition of success instead of living up to someone else’s expectations.
This is why I admire Blessing Kolapo. She’s transitioned from one venture to another while maintaining the same overarching goal: making money and teaching others how to do the same. Her income and happiness remain intact despite outside opinions, and she’s enjoying the process. That’s what it’s all about.
2. Writing Out a Plan
Once you’ve defined success, map out the steps to achieve it. For example, I’ve realized I find joy in selling—both the process and the outcome. One of my goals is to have both physical and digital products that bring in profit.
To start, I’ve decided to focus on selling physical products while preparing for my digital product launch. This plan includes setting aside funds for marketing and creating essential branding elements. Regardless of what people say, I’m committed to this path.
3. Structuring and Accountability
A solid plan needs a structure. I’ve written out my selling strategies and created an accountability system. This blog itself is part of that accountability, alongside mentors and friends who keep me in check. Having a support system ensures I stay on track.
4. Taking Action
There’s a thin line between genuine preparation and merely assuming you’re preparing. Hilda Baci’s record-breaking cooking marathon is a perfect example of preparation done right. She didn’t just dream about success; she worked for it. On the flip side, many who attempted the same feat didn’t achieve similar results because their preparation didn’t go deep enough.
I’ve learned to avoid overthinking. Instead of getting stuck in endless brainstorming, I’ve committed to planning, researching, and executing. Preparation is key, but it’s just as important to give your preparation a deadline and act on it.
For My Fellow Dreamers
If you’re struggling with branding or fear of transitioning, remember this: your growth matters more than public opinion. If your current process isn’t working, don’t hesitate to try something new. Transition boldly into a better version of yourself.
Taking action, no matter how small, is essential. I’ve started by setting up an Instagram account for my products, reaching out to contacts, and creating content. It’s all about consistent, daily steps that add up over time.
In Summary
People will always have opinions, but their words don’t define you.
Focus on what success means to you, create a plan, and take action.
Build an internal shield to filter out negativity, and surround yourself with the right people to keep you grounded.
